This system is the first at NU to offer a comprehensive study of energy metabolism in awake, unrestrained laboratory mice. The Metabolic Chamber houses standard home cages and can monitor many aspects of energy metabolism, including: 1. Food intake 2. Drinking behavior 3. Physical activity (in XYZ dimensions: horizontal and vertical) 4. Energy expenditure (via indirect calorimetry) 5. Fine movements, e.g. grooming 6. Movement at the center and/or periphery of the cage 7. Control of food access, e.g. pair feeding All of the above parameters, except 7, are monitored every 30 minutes. The facility is located on the Chicago campus. During the study, the animals will be singly caged for 6-7 days, with the first 3 days for acclimation and the rest for data analysis. The cost of the study is $8.00/mouse/day, so a 6-day study of 8 mice will cost only $384.00.
